Monroe City School Becomes Blue Jeans Community Center

The old Monroe City School stands at 1242 Main Street, Monroe City, Indiana. The main part of the structure, showing the pillared front entrance, was built in 1910. The addition, plus gymnasium was added in 1936. Another building had been used as Monroe City School before this one, so there are records of Monroe City graduates from 1905 through 1967.

When the building closed as Monroe City School, it was used for the South Knox Elementary School.

In 1999, the doors once again closed as a school. The beloved old building became home to the BlueJeans Community Center.

The name BlueJeans is from the Honorable Govenor James D. “BlueJeans” Williams. The Govenor was from this community and being a country boy at heart, acquired this nickname from wearing home made bluejeans to the Govenor’s office. The Monroe City Bluejeans basketball team carried his nickname, and the community center continues to honor him as well.

Spring
The Redbuds are blooming, Lilacs in bloom, well most Spring trees and flowers are in bloom. Little League has started some practice, people are finding Mushrooms; But the weatherman used that 4 letter word that starts with s and ends with w and has no in the middle. I guess there isn't much that can be done about it. Just wait and see what happens. The Purple plants growing in all the fields is HenBit. It's one of the few plants with square stems.

Monroe City Fire

Cause of Monroe City fire may not be determined
Sunday blaze destroyed two downtown buildings

MONROE CITY - A large smoldering pile of rubble is all that's left of two downtown buildings following a Sunday-morning fire that some 50 firefighters from 10 area departments battled for hours.

A boil order remains in effect for local residents, as the town's water tower was drained by the firemen's efforts to battle the blaze.

Chad Hansen, chief of the Harrison Township Fire Department, said it may be impossible to determine what caused the blaze, which broke out around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, due to the extensive damage.

Hansen said a member of the department on his way home from work early Sunday spotted smoke coming from the two-story building ( the old Corner Discount) owned by Jerry Kohlhouse at 101 W. Ninth St. Within a couple of minutes the nearly-100 year old brick building was fully engulfed in flames.

Hansen said strong winds spread the fire to a neighboring building that housed Phil's Place (Tic's) restaurant at 906 Main St., ultimately destroying it as well.

He said if not for an early-morning rain, the fire could have spread throughout downtown.

The Kohlhouse building had originally been a commercial property. Throughout the years it had housed a bank, a pharmacy, and grocery store but had most recently been a single family residence. The owners of the building were on vacation when the fire broke out.

Phil's Place (Tic's) was also unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Both buildings have been called a total loss by firefighters.

Local Weather
Posted by bjcc on Monday, February 02 @ 10:17:51 CST (702 reads)

Things are slowly getting back to normal. Last week we had about 5 inches of snow topped with about an inch of ice topped with about another 5 inches of snow. Most of the major roads are clear now. Some backroads and side streets are still very hazardous. The Schools were closed 4 days last week. They went today on a two hour delay. Our area is one of the lucky ones. Vanderburg and Warrick Counties(Evansville and Booneville areas)still have no power since Tuesday. Kentucky was also hard hit.
